“Ok people, we all need to be on our A game today,” Deborah said, as she guzzled a mug of coffee while staring at a plate of scrambled eggs. She had a look on her face like she was about to throw up.

It was a little after 9 a.m., and Deborah, Robert, and Delphine were sitting at a small round table in the hotel’s first floor restaurant having breakfast. Delphine popped fresh blueberries into her mouth, and Robert was eating Cheerios, though he wasn’t feeling very cheerful.

“Where’s Mike?” Robert looked at Deborah with the hint of a sly grin on his face.

“Oh, I told him he could sleep in. Wilma had him working late into the night, carrying boxes of candles to various locations in the Convention Center. She had her little assistants running around like crazy people, too. At the last minute, she decided she wanted to completely change the entrance to the Convention Center for her keynote. She said she’d been inspired by images she’d seen online.”

“Last year, she came in on a Harley with Brick House blasting over the sound system and like a 1,000 pounds of glitter falling from the rafters. What’s the plan this year?”

“Wouldn’t say,” Deborah said. “She did mention that it would have a Female Empowerment theme, and that she wants all of the Fete-Lite branding to be about Female Empowerment going forward.”

“A woman with her finger on the pulse,” Delphine chimed in. “She can see where the world is headed.”

“Headed?” Robert took a sip of water. “Feels like we’re already there.”

“Well, your world certainly is,” Delphine said, almost forgetting that Deborah was sitting at the table with them. “And by choice, I might add.”

“And by circumstances beyond my control,” Robert retorted.

“What the hell are you two talking about?” Deborah said, confused by the conversation.

“Oh, didn’t you know,” Delphine said, “Robert is a…”

“Delphine!” Robert said, unable to hide his exasperated tone.

“Oh, Robert, stop hiding your true identity. It’s going to come out sooner or later anyway.”

“True identity?” Deborah said, sipping her water and rubbing her temple.

“Yes, didn’t you know, Robert is a…is a…”

“A feminist,” Robert jumped in. Then he felt a quick sting in his groin. He looked over at Delphine. She had her hand in her purse, her finger on the button.

“Oh, OK. Good for you Robert. But it’s a little early to discuss gender politics, don’t you think? Can we move on and talk about something else, like, work!”

“Great idea.” Robert shot Delphine a look. “So what do you need from us?”

“Delphine, get your laptop set up in the Convention Center’s Grand Ballroom for tonight’s main event. On Wilma’s cue, you’ll be showing the Tea Party promo video. Robert, you need to be nearby in case Wilma wants you to say a few words to set up the video, which she probably will,”

“No problem,” Delphine said.

“Sounds easy enough,” Robert added. “So, what do we do from now until tonight?”

“Just be around, be on call, in case anything comes up. You’re mainly here to observe the Fete-Lite Faithful, so we can continue to evolve the brand.
